Hydrotherapy (Aquatherapy) is any activity performed in water to assist in rehabilitation and recovery for eg.hard training or serious injury. It is a popular treatment for patients with neurologic and musculoskeletal conditions. There are many benefits to hydrotherapy. Hydrotherapy can decrease pain and swelling, increase function, strength and range of movement. It has been shown to improve mood and sleep in some, fitness and weight loss in others.
In comparison with land-based physiotherapy, exercising in the water eliminates anxiety and fear of falling by providing postural support. This often enables improved relaxation and flexibility of the limbs. Often neurological clients are able to perform activities in the pool that they are unable to perform on dry land.
The unique properties of water, including the decreased effects of gravity, the effects of buoyancy, hydrostatic pressure are used by the physiotherapist along with their diagnostic skills, exercise knowledge and other treatment techniques to enhance the recovery and rehabilitation of clients after injury with a wide range of conditions and provide a unique environment to maintain health, well-being and fitness. The buoyancy of the water unloads the weight of the body, reducing stress on joints and allowing freedom of movement in musculoskeletal injuries/pain.
